Abstract In many situations, the gene expression signature is a unique marker of biological state. We study modification distribution function when state system experiences change. This change may be result selective pressure, as in Long Term Evolution Experiment with E. Coli populations, or progression to Alzheimer disease aged brains, from normal tissue cancer The first two cases seem belong class transitions, where initial and final states are relatively close each other, for differential expressions short ranged, tail only few dozens strongly varying genes. latter case, cancer, far apart separated by low-fitness barrier. shows very heavy tail, thousands silenced over-expressed characterize means their principal component representations, functions maximal minimal values exponents Pareto laws describing tails.
